Nickie Harte Kelly Honeypaw is a Canadian duo, known for ranging deep into woodlands to find hollow trees that will be ideal to become temporary harps, then dismantling the harp “pinnings” when they are done recording. These are studio pieces, built around exploring Finnish and Baltic traditions, utilizing the Baltic psaltery, known as kantele in Finland, and kanklės in Lithuania, as well as the Finnish jouhikko. They trade off vocally, or perform call and response type pieces here. Absolutely haunting. Favorite track: Kolme kakea.

This album began with research on the field collections of Aukusti Robert Niemi in Finland, Karelia, and Lithuania. He was investigating the connection between Finnic and Baltic languages, and pioneered the field collection of sutartines. The texts from this album were largely collected by him. However, a dark winter changed our focus to the themes of lament and loss, and the album finds itself caught in the space between melancholy and groove.
